Dr Jay Byrnes is an acclaimed Australian saxophonist, performer, arranger, educator and arts leader known for his dynamic presence on stage and his wide-ranging contributions to music performance, education and cultural organisations.

Jay is recognised as a leading figure in the Australian saxophone scene, noted for his expressive interpretations of repertoire spanning from Baroque and classical transcriptions to tango and Latin American music. He has performed extensively as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Europe, South America and Australasia, and his work with ensembles such as the Nexas Quartet has taken him to major Australian concert halls and festivals including the Sydney Opera House and the Adelaide Cabaret Festival.

His discography includes multiple recordings, such as his debut album El Asunto del Tango and several Nexas Quartet releases. Jay is also a respected arranger with over 200 works created for saxophone ensembles and soloists.

As an educator, Jay has held teaching roles in Australia, the United Kingdom and Venezuela, given masterclasses internationally, and founded the Saxophone Academy Sydney, a specialised school offering high-level saxophone tuition. He has also taught at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music - The University of Sydney and several private music programs.

In the broader arts sector, Jay has built a strong profile in arts leadership and production. He has served as Executive Producer at Piano Plus Australia (home of the Sydney International Piano Competition) and spent five years as producer of the Orange Chamber Music Festival. In 2025 he was appointed Executive Director of Camerata – Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra, bringing his artistic insight and organisational experience to one of Australia’s leading chamber music organisations.

Jay holds a Doctor of Musical Arts, a Bachelor of Music from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and a Masters in Music from the Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo in Porto, Portugal, reflecting his deep engagement with both performance and research.
